Quiquiriqui Mezcal: A Legacy of Tradition

Quiquiriqui Mezcal celebrates the rich heritage of Mexican mezcal production. Founded in 2012, the brand partners directly with the Mendez family, a renowned mezcal-making family from Matatlan, Oaxaca. With over 80 years of experience and three generations of tradition, the Mendez family produces Quiquiriqui mezcal using time-honored techniques at their family palenque.

The Quiquiriqui Process:

  1. Agave Sourcing: Quiquiriqui prioritizes sustainable practices, sourcing agave from local farmers with whom the Mendez family has long-standing relationships.
  2. Traditional Roasting: The harvested piñas are roasted in a wood-fired earthen oven, a time-honored method that imparts the signature smoky flavor.
  3. Hand-Crafted Milling: The roasted piñas are meticulously crushed by hand using a traditional tahona, a stone wheel pulled by a horse.
  4. Natural Fermentation: The crushed agave is fermented naturally in open vats, allowing indigenous yeasts to work their magic.
  5. Double Distillation: The fermented juice is carefully distilled twice in copper pot stills, with the first distillation taking place over eight hours.
  6. Blending & Resting: The distillate is expertly blended by the Mendez family, incorporating their secret recipes and allowing the flavors to harmonize for two weeks before bottling.

Quiquiriqui's Commitment:

  • Sustainability: Quiquiriqui is committed to sustainable practices, supporting local farmers and ensuring the long-term viability of traditional mezcal production.
  • Quality: The brand focuses on producing high-quality, handcrafted mezcal that reflects the unique terroir and traditions of Oaxaca.
  • Transparency: Quiquiriqui emphasizes transparency, sharing the story behind each bottle and highlighting the craftsmanship of the Mendez family.
